間 -ma-

Ma is one of the most profound concepts in Japanese culture — a word that holds within it the pause between spaces, the breath between moments, the atmosphere born when objects exist in harmony with one another.

In the arts of tea ceremony and Noh theatre, ma is the beauty found within silence — not mere emptiness, but a living interval where people, nature, and art converge. How is it that something invisible can move us so deeply?

This work takes ma as its foundation, and reimagines the very idea of a garden. Natural phenomena have been distilled to their essence and rendered as pure spatial intervals. Offcuts salvaged from a sawmill have been repurposed and dyed with indigo, giving the materials a rare and singular texture.

The space is built on contrast.

Outside, a directional grid and flat composition express stillness and aridity.

Inside, a perspective grid creates depth and fluidity — a sense of moisture, of something alive.

Within this space, ma exists in many forms. The elements of a garden have been stripped to almost nothing, yet through the language and craft of Japanese culture, a garden remains.

Can this still be called a garden? Step inside, and discover a new form of ma for yourself.

間 -ma-

「間」は、日本文化が育んできた、きわめて豊かな概念である。空間と時間の隙間、人の手が生み出す余白、物と物が響き合うことで生まれる空気感——その意味は、静かに、しかし深く広がっている。

茶道や能楽において、沈黙の中に宿る美しさと深みこそが「間」であり、それは単なる空白ではない。人と人、人と自然、人と芸術が交わる、かけがえのない瞬間そのものだ。目には見えないはずの「間」が、なぜこれほどまでに心を揺さぶるのか。

本作では、その「間」を軸に据え、庭という概念を根本から問い直した。自然現象をその本質まで抽出し、シンプルな「間」として空間へと昇華させている。製材所で生まれた端材を再利用し、木材を藍染めすることで、他にはない希少なテクスチャーを纏わせた。

空間には、対比という構造が息づいている。

外部は、方面グリッドと平面的な構成によって、静寂と乾きを体現する。

内部は、パースグリッドが生む奥行きと流動性によって、潤いと生命の気配を漂わせる。

この空間には、いくつもの「間」が宿っている。庭の要素を極限まで削ぎ落としながらも、日本文化の表現と技法によって、確かに庭として成立させた。

——これは、庭と呼べるのだろうか。新たな「間」のかたちを、どうかその身で感じてほしい。
